After a knee operation and a change of stables, multiple stakes-placed Wolf Cry is set to return to racing at Flemington.
Wolf Cry won one of his eight starts when trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, with his victory coming in January in the lucrative Magic Millions Maiden at the Gold Coast.
Now a four-year-old, Wolf Cry was placed in two Listed races as a juvenile as well as the Group Two Skyline Stakes.
He ran in stakes races for three-year-olds during the Sydney autumn and has had a bone chip removed from his off-fore knee since he last raced in the Darby Munro Stakes in March.
Webb said Wolf Cry had the surgery before coming to his stable.
Wolf Cry steps out in Saturday’s Scamanda Handicap (1100m) at Flemington and is on the second line of betting for the race which has already had five scratchings.
“He’s first-up so I’m still learning a little bit about him but he’s a highly talented horse,” Webb said.
“He’s a gross horse, so he’ll probably need the run.”
Wolf Cry has had two barrier trials, the most recent a second placing at Stony Creek, in the past month.
Webb said the horse did all he was asked to do in one of the trials and was good in the other.
“He’s Group-placed for a reason, because he’s got lots of talent, and hopefully he’ll continue his good record,” Webb said.
Webb said he doesn’t have any plans with Wolf Cry but noted there were still a couple of Magic Millions race options at the Gold Coast on January 14.
“He’ll get through tomorrow and we’ll reassess,” he said.
Webb has trained for some of Wolf Cry’s connections and he races in the same colours as former stable star Yosei.
“Some of the owners that are in Great Esteem are in him,” Webb said.
“And Aquanita have got the facilities of the water treadmill and the above ground treadmill which is really good for a horse post-surgery.”
Webb also has Get The Picture running over 2000m on Saturday and said he would be disappointed if he wasn’t competitive.
