Randwick Guineas Tips, Race Preview and Selections – 5/3/2022

The Randwick Guineas makes up part of Saturday’s Group 1 doubleheader in Sydney with another quality field of three-year-olds accepting for the $1 million feature.

Dual Group 1 winner Anamoe has been installed as a dominant favourite following a win in the Hobartville Stakes two weeks ago, but he does have a serious challenge on his hands with proven miler Converge, and consistent Hawkes-trained galloper Hilal lining up alongside.

Only two favourites have won this race over the last 10 years, and with another heavy track expected, there’s a strong chance of another upset – similar to Lion’s Roar’s victory last year at 25-1.

For analysis on every runner, check out our 2022 Randwick Guineas Preview!

1. Anamoe (9)

  • Record: 13:6-4-2
  • Group 1’s: 2 (2021 Sires’ Produce, Caulfield Guineas)
  • Track: 2:2-0-0
  • Distance: 1:1-0-0
  • Trainer: James Cummings
  • Jockey: James McDonald
  • Odds: $2.00

Bounced back nicely from an okay performance in the Expressway first-up to win the Hobartville as the short-priced favourite. Unbeaten in two starts at Randwick and gets James McDonald back on board. Yet to strike a heavy track, but has handled soft going in the past and is also unbeaten third-up. Drawn to get back and is the one they all have to beat.

2. Converge (6)

  • Record: 10:3-2-3
  • Group 1’s: 1 (2021 J.J. Atkins)
  • Track: 3:1-0-2
  • Distance: 3:2-0-1
  • Trainer: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott
  • Jockey: Tim Clark
  • Odds: $6.00

Strips fitter for two runs back and gets out to his preferred distance now. Won the J.J. Atkins over the mile last year and was only two lengths off Captivant over the track and distance in the Champagne Stakes. Made up big ground late last time out in the Hobartville for third and should be ridden a little closer to the speed from the handy gate. Slight query if it’s super wet but warrants tremendous respect.

3. Hilal (4)

  • Record: 12:3-4-1
  • Group 1’s: 0
  • Track: 6:2-3-0
  • Distance: 2:1-1-0
  • Trainer: Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes
  • Jockey: William Pike
  • Odds: $6.00

Genuine type that looks set to peak third-up. Had plenty go wrong in the Hobartville but still stuck to the task to finish runner-up and give Anamoe another scare. Twice placed at Group 1 level last autumn and was also a winner of the Bondi Stakes over the track and distance during the spring. Has scope for improvement and should be saving his best for late.

4. Coastwatch (11)

  • Record: 12:3-2-2
  • Group 1’s: 0
  • Track: 3:0-1-0
  • Distance: 1:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Chris Waller
  • Jockey: Nash Rawiller
  • Odds: $26.00

Dual acceptor. Was brave first-up, fending off a late challenge to win the Autumn Stakes at Caulfield right on the line. Placed in the Golden Rose last year behind In The Congo and Anamoe and is proven on rain-affected going. Just needs a touch of luck from the barrier and a place wouldn’t surprise.

5. Forgot You (7)

Has also accepted for the Australian Guineas at Flemington. Ran well first-up in the CS Hayes Stakes at Caulfield where he clocked the second-fastest final 200m of the meeting. Won at The Valley second-up last prep and then went on to win over the mile in his next start. On debut at Randwick but is another won that has handled the wet before.

6. Ranch Hand (1)

Dual acceptor. Had excuses in the Hobartville but still finished off okay for fourth. Was good the start prior when a narrow runner-up to Pauzele first-up and should appreciate some sting out of the track. Jury is still out on whether he wants the mile and barrier 1 looks less than ideal.

7. Military Expert (13)

  • Record: 7:2-2-1
  • Group 1’s: 0
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Annabel Neasham
  • Jockey: Tommy Berry
  • Odds: $26.00

Should cross and lead. Won a BM72 at Rosehill in fine style two weeks ago but is facing a much tougher task now. First look at the mile and is also on debut at Randwick. Fitter but tough to entertain.

8. Raging Bull (12)

  • Record: 7:1-0-2
  • Group 1’s: 0
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: David Payne
  • Jockey: Sam Clipperton
  • Odds: $61.00

Second up. Wide without cover first-up in the Hobartville and failed to threaten. Ran well in the Spring Champion Stakes and the Victoria Derby during the spring but is probably looking for a little further.

9. Royalzel (10)

  • Record: 11:4-0-1
  • Group 1’s: 0
  • Track: 2:0-0-0
  • Distance: 2:1-0-0
  • Trainer: Gary Portelli
  • Jockey: Brenton Avdulla
  • Odds: $61.00

Second last and last in both runs back. Has had a trial in between starts but doesn’t look up to troubling these.

10. War Eternal (2)

  • Record: 8:2-2-0
  • Group 1’s: 0
  • Track: 3:1-0-0
  • Distance: 1:0-1-0
  • Trainer: Bjorn Baker
  • Jockey: Jason Collett
  • Odds: $14.00

Facing Group 1 company for the first time. Won a BM78 over shorter at Rosehill two weeks ago and was also second over the mile in a Group 3 at Newcastle during the spring. Drawn to get another strong run from midfield and could sneak a place.

11. Sword Point (3)

  • Record: 6:2-1-0
  • Group 1’s: 0
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 2:1-1-0
  • Trainer: Chris Waller
  • Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy
  • Odds: $51.00

Promising colt from a leading stable. Won his maiden in fine style at Canterbury late last year and was a clear four-length winner in BM78 grade last time out. Comes in off a soft trial and has form over the mile. Could run a sneaky race.

12. Sinba (8)

Back-to-back winner at Newcastle and Kensington. Facing a much tougher assignment but does has been racing like the mile will suit. Loves to get back and run on and should be swooping in late if he gets through the conditions. Place chance.

13. Sea Treasures (5)

  • Record: 5:1-0-1
  • Group 1’s: 0
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 1:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Bjorn Baker
  • Jockey: Ms Rachel King
  • Odds: $151

Showed improvement for third last week at Kembla Grange but is facing a much stiffer challenge here.
