Randwick racecourse escapes worst of Sydney rain

Randwick has missed the full brunt of a storm that wreaked havoc across Sydney, giving Australian Turf Club officials some hope Saturday’s City Tattersall’s Club Cup meeting could be run on a respectable racing surface.

More than 60mm of rain fell on Randwick but that was half of what was dumped on Canterbury racecourse on Tuesday night.

“We had a few more millimetres this morning and we’ve posted the track in the heavy range,” Australian Turf Club racecourse manager Lindsay Murphy said.

“Tomorrow holds the key but the forecast is quite promising.”

If the weather bureau is right Murphy expects Randwick to improve to the slow range with a chance that it could dry out even further.

Early scratchings for the meeting include the 2013 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Miracles Of Life who has been sent to Melbourne to have her first start for Peter and Paul Snowden at Caulfield.

Her defection leaves Deep Field as the odds-on favourite to win the Lightning Handicap.

Although unbeaten in three starts, Deep Field is yet to win on a surface rated worse than dead.

Big Money has also been redirected to the Caulfield meeting.
