Prix De Turn gets a second chance

Prix De Turn was once on the brink of a new life as a show horse, but instead he’s making a surprise racetrack return at Caulfield in the Sportsbet Race Replays Handicap (1400m) on Saturday.

The Matthew Brown-trained galloper has not raced since the 2023 Yarra Valley Cup, and despite winning only twice from 18 starts, he did land the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes in his prime.

Thrown in the deep end early in his career, he tackled the elite company in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas at just his second start.

Trainer Matthew Brown said persistent physical issues had hampered the gelding, but he now returns fresh and sound after a lengthy break.

“He’s had a lot of issues with his conformation and feet,” Brown said. “But after nearly a year in the paddock, we had a look and thought, why not give him another try.”

Prix De Turn has completed two jump-outs, including a solid fourth on a heavy track, and Brown views Saturday more as a fitness test than a genuine target.

“We’ll see if he still wants to do it. If not, we may explore sending him to Tasmania for a change in scenery,” Brown added.

Apprentice Rose Hammond will take the ride, and her claim brings the horse in at just 50kg.
