Premiere Stakes 2012 tips, preview and selections

A mammoth day’s racing comes to a close with the Premiere Stakes over 1200m, where the big question will be – can Rain Affair bounce back after his poor showing first up. He meets some smart types and in a ten horse field that will be sure to test him out.

1. RAIN AFFAIR

Had won eleven of his sixteen and was expected to enhance that record when returning in the G3 Concorde Stakes earlier this month however, it was soon evident that not all was as it should be with the 2/1 on favourite and he finished fourth of seven, beaten 4.4 lengths Has won a trial in good style since, suggesting that, whatever did go amiss in his first up run, has been rectified.

Odds: $2.30

Rain Affair will start as favourite in the Premiere Stakes

2. RENEWED VITALITY

Handy galloper who resumed with a eighth of sixteen in the G2 The Shorts here at Randwick a fortnight ago. Second up last prep was third in a Restricted race at Canterbury. His draw and weight do him no favours here.

Odds: $67.00

3. HURTLE MYRTLE

She won the G1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington over last year’s Spring Carnival but in a short Autumn campaign, failed to reproduce.
She returned to racing at Caulfield a fortnight ago in the G3 Sportingbet, beaten five lengths behind Detours. From 13 starts on Good tracks, hasn’t registered a victory.

Odds: $21.00

4. RED TRACER

Smart mare who has won eight of her nineteen starts. Fantastic record first up, as she is here today, that includes a third in the G2 Breeder’s Classic behind Steps In Time and victory in the G2 Dane Ripper Stakes. Has been prepared for this race with two barrier trails and from her good draw, sure to be somewhere in the finish.

Odds: $6.00

5. STREAMA

Very good three weeks ago first up behind More Joyous in the Sheraco Stakes, finishing well for third (beaten 1.7). Won both her second up runs (G2 Furious Stakes and G2 Surround) in her last two preps and is three from three here at Randwick.

Odds: $6.50

6. PEAR TART

Lightly raced 4yo mare from the Patinack Farm stable who won four from her five starts last prep including the G2 Qld Guineas and G1 Tatt’s Tiara, deafeating Skyrushe. Blossomed last prep and if she’s come on further since, would have to be included.

Odds: $10.00

7. SATIN SHOES

Very good at her second run in this preparation when pushing the smart Pampelonne to a head in the G2 The Shorts here at Randwick a fortnight ago. She’s a smart sprinter on her day who normally races forward so her gate might be a slight concern here as is her record of nine starts for no wins over this distance.

Odds: $7.00

8. SHANNARA

A handy mare from the Darley yard who tackles this race first up after a seventeen week spell. First up last prep got home very well behind He’s Remarkable in the G3 Newmarket Hcp at Newcastle. Will get back and we’ll know by this race if there’s any track bias but she can really unleash a finish if given the chance.

Odds: $34.00

9. EVER THE SAME

Near last as they turned in the G2 The Shorts when she was first up a fortnight ago and didn’t have much luck in the run home. Won the Listed PJ Bell last prep beating the handy performer and recent winner Aerobatics in the process. Fancied her an eachway chance first up and prepared to throw her in the multiples again here.

Odds: $16.00

10. EMOTIONAL CIRCUS

She got a long way back at her most recent start in the The Shorts – a race dominated by those up front. She’s another mare that can produce a huge finish if the pattern of the race and track favours those that do so.

Odds: $13.00
OVERVIEW

Interesting race as you can almost split the field in two as to those who press forward and those who will get back. Do we forget about the first up failure and pile into Rain Affair? He did run second in two Group 1’s last prep and the weight conditions of this race, do play into his favour. As does the barrier draw, if he doesn’t lead he’ll be sitting second. $2.30 on offer in early markets looks tempting. Red Tracer and Streama will be hot on his trail and, should there be a chink in Rain Affair’s armour, they’re likely to found it out. There’s a host of swoopers in the race with the pick of them for mine being the two down the bottom, Ever The Same and Emotional Circus. At $16 and $13 respectively, throw them in the multiples for a bit of value.
