Consistent gelding Pounding will look to continue his strong campaign when he contests the VOBIS Gold Heath (2000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained seven-year-old has already earned over $63,000 from six runs this campaign, and a win this weekend could see him pocket another $96,250, along with a $30,000 bonus for eligible runners.
Across 53 career starts, Pounding has notched eight wins and 16 placings, banking nearly $1.45 million for connections through his consistency and durability.
He backs up quickly from a solid fifth-place finish in last Saturday’s Listed Winter Championship Final (1600m) at Flemington and now stretches back out to 2000m for the first time since July last year, when he finished fourth over the same trip at the same track.
Moody said Saturday’s assignment had long been in the planning and that the gelding thrives on the seven-day turnaround.
“He loves a seven-day back-up, so it was always the plan,” Moody said.
“It’s a VOBIS race and he’s amongst his own again this week.
“He arguably should have won the other day as he didn’t get a crack at them until late, but it sets him up well for this one.”
Pounding will again face familiar rival Jimmy The Bear, who finished ahead of him last weekend, although this time Pounding meets him worse off at the weights.
“He’s got Jimmy The Bear to contend with again, but a different one seems to win each week,” Moody said.
“He’s in good order and hopefully it’s our turn on Saturday.
“He’s been consistent throughout his career, and he’s won $60,000 this campaign without winning a race and won over $1.4 million overall.
“You would like three or four of them in the yard, as he’s always a chance every time he runs.”
Rather than pursuing early-season weight-for-age contests, Moody indicated Pounding is likely to be targeted toward country cups in the spring, including a potential defence of the Sale Cup, which he won last year.
With his durability and form, Pounding presents as a live betting prospect in Saturday’s VOBIS Gold Heath at Caulfield.
