News:

Group One winner Fenway will get the opportunity to press her claims for a Cox Plate start when she makes her Moonee Valley debut in the Stocks Stakes.

Co-trainer Shannon Hope was at Moonee Valley on Monday morning to watch Fenway in a familiarisation gallop at the track ahead of Friday night’s Group Two Stocks Stakes (1600m) for mares.

Fenway holds a Cox Plate nomination and Hope, who trains in partnership with his father Lee, admitted he would be keen to have a crack at the Cox Plate if Fenway performed well on Friday night.

He believes the four-year-old probably needs to win to get a berth in next month’s $3 million weight-for-age race.

“But by the same token she’s a Group One winner which brings her in good stead for it as well,” Hope said.

“If she won a Group Two around here it would certainly help her.”

The Group One Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington is another spring option.

Blake Shinn reunites with Fenway who is trained by his stepfather and stepbrother.

Shinn rode Fenway to win the Group One Vinery Stud Stakes in the autumn as well as to second in the Australian Oaks.

He was aboard stablemate Platinum Rocker when Fenway resumed with an unplaced run in the Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington.

Hope said Monday’s 1000m gallop achieved what he wanted with Fenway sitting off stablemate Always Lucky before accounting for him over the final 100m.

Seymour-based Hope was pleased with the way she handled the track and pulled up from the work.

“I brought her down here this morning just to see if she actually handles it,” he said.

“I know it’s different to race pressure but she seemed to wheel around the corner with no problem, it’s a momentum track and she seems to like momentum.”
