Police send message to Melbourne Cup Carnival 2012 racegoers

Victorian police are urging racegoers to celebrate responsibly or face fines during Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival.

Police will have a strong presence on all major race days and will be targeting post-event behaviour in Ascot Vale, Moonee Ponds and Flemington.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Andrew Crisp urged punters to be responsible.

“The Melbourne Cup Carnival is one of the most exciting events run in Melbourne and we want racegoers to enjoy themselves but to do so safely,” Mr Crisp said.

“We know that excessive alcohol consumption can lead to anti-social behaviour.

“We want to send a strong message that any behaviour which impacts negatively on others will not be tolerated.”

Police will be targeting excessive drinking, underage gambling, alcohol consumption, anti-social behaviour and drink driving, Mr Crisp said.

Strict penalties including on-the-spot fines and eviction from the venue will apply to anyone detected doing the wrong thing.

Mr Crisp said punters planning to drink are reminded to take public transport or arrange a designated driver or taxi.
