Philippi gets hat trick of wins on Turnbull Stakes day

Exciting colt Philippi completed a hat-trick of wins to remain unbeaten after sailing to success in the Listed UCI Stakes at Flemington.

Philippi, owned by Black Caviar’s breeder Rick Jamieson, produced a stunning burst over the closing 100m at his first middle distance test.

Sent out a $5 chance, Philippi beat Hvasstan ($7.50) by three-quarters of a length with Jimando ($15) a short neck further back in third.

Philippi and Hvasstan are now firming as favourites for the Victoria Derby at Flemington on November 3.

Cranbourne trainer Michael Kent said a power-packed finish was becoming Philippi’s trademark.

“That was a good strong race,” Kent said. “He was in a bit of an awkward spot on the home turn, just trying to get clear.

“But he’s always been strong late and he was again today.”

Philippi will head to the Derby via the Group Two Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield rather than the Group Two AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

“He’d probably run in the Robinson, that would be the obvious path,” Kent said. “We wouldn’t run in the Vase, that would be too quick.

“It’s his first prep and we’re very mindful of that. Obviously we’re heading towards the Derby but we’ll just let him tell us.

“This is only his third run in his life and he’s done quite a good job.”
