Peter Moody to walk away from training

Peter Moody is set to walk away from training, at least for the foreseeable future.

While Moody is yet to publicly comment, the trainer has written to his clients telling them of his intentions not to return to his stable when his six-month suspension for a cobalt offence is finished.

“It is with much regret and a heartfelt decision that I have to inform you that I am going to recant my suggestion on Friday of where I said I would be back training in six months,” Moody said in his letter.

“After a lot of deliberation with my family and senior management staff, we didn’t feel it was going to be a viable or workable proposition to employ another trainer to caretake the stable for the 6 month period of my suspension.

“With this in mind I have made the ultimate decision that at this point in time I will not be returning to the training of racehorses in the foreseeable future.

“Maybe down the track this is something I will revisit.”

Moody, who gained international acclaim as the trainer of unbeaten champion Black Caviar, was found not guilty of deliberately administering cobalt for the purpose of affecting the performance of Lidari who returned an illegal level of cobalt after his second in the 2014 Turnbull Stakes.

But Moody was found guilty on a lesser charge and his stable practices were criticised by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board.

In a Twitter post directed to Moody on Monday, the Melbourne Racing Club which operates Caulfield where Moody trains, wrote “thanks for all the great memories. Good luck for whatever lies next for you.”

Moody has won four Melbourne trainers’ premierships and has trained three Horse of the Year winners with Black Caviar winning the award three years in a row. Typhoon Tracy and Dissident were his other champions.

Racing Victoria stewards have also flagged an appeal against Moody’s suspension after calling for a two-year disqualification during the penalty hearing last week.
