PB Lawrence Stakes 2014: Kincaple trainer in open-minded approach despite odds

Cranbourne trainer Mark Webb has three spring plans for Kincaple depending on how the former Perth stayer races in Saturday’s PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield.

Webb is Kincaple’s fifth trainer after the nine-year-old headed east following a stint in the Mike Reed stable that followed two starts for leading West Australian horseman Adam Durrant.

Kincaple will take on Foreteller and Puissance De Lune and Webb will use the weight-for-age race as an early chance to assess the veteran’s spring bona fides.

Webb said Kincaple’s performance would help him decide how high he would aim with the injury-plagued galloper.

“We’ll see how he kicks off tomorrow and then we’ll either go into a lower-range sequence of races, a medium range or a high-level range based on how he stacks up,” Webb said.

Kincaple’s owners initially sent the stayer to Webb for an Adelaide Cup campaign but the trainer decided to spell the gelding to give him time to overcome any lingering issues.

Bookmakers have Kincaple as a $61 outsider and Webb said the Lawrence Stakes would form part of his strategy to have the horse at peak fitness at the end of next month.
