Patrick Payne had extra reason to celebrate his belated 50th birthday, landing a Caulfield double alongside sister Michelle and jockey Billy Egan in quick succession on Saturday.
The Payne siblings teamed up to land back-to-back wins with reliable campaigner Jimmy The Bear in the VOBIS Gold Heath (2000m), followed immediately by the promising Stop The Rock in the Sportsbet Same Race Multi Handicap over the same trip.
Jimmy The Bear, a week removed from his Listed Winter Championship Final (1600m) success at Flemington, justified his $1.70 favourite tag by powering home under a perfectly judged ride.
“Billy was in a beautiful spot, settled, and the speed was nice and steady which helped him run out the 2000 metres,” Michelle Payne said post-race.
“He was racing on his own which allowed him to switch off and then he got the beautiful cart up and then he had every possible hope from there.”
The now six-year-old gelding brought up win number 12 from 37 starts, pushing his earnings beyond $1.37 million.
Michelle said her brother’s patience and focus on long-term soundness is the cornerstone of their approach.
“He really wants them to find the line and continue to have that spirit to race and Jimmy is a prime example of that,” she said.
“He had a horse Widgee Turf who was very similar. He was a $5000 purchase and won a lot of these VOBIS Gold races.”
“It’s a tough game and a lot of money goes into it with the owners and everything, but all we can hope for is delivering the best we can for the owners of these horses, so they can enjoy it.”
Rising stable star Stop The Rock overcame a troubled trip to score his fourth win from just five starts, surging late after being shuffled back during the race.
“When I was watching Billy and Stop The Rock down the back straight, I thought that might be his race done,” Michelle admitted.
“He was very tight against the rail, and he checked which disrupted his rhythm, so to overcome that, for a young horse, it was a good effort.”
She said the horse had shown promise early but has only now started putting it all together. “He turns up race day, is no fuss, and gets the job done and is becoming another stable favourite.”
