News:

Ron Quinton is confident Daysee Doom can step up to 1600 metres and loom as the major threat to stablemate Dixie Blossoms defending the Angst Stakes at Randwick.

The trainer’s duo gave Quinton a quinella in the Group Two Golden Pendant at Rosehill on September 23, with Daysee Doom victorious by a short neck.

Dixie Blossoms won the Group Three Angst last year after one previous run over the distance and Quinton said he did not think the 1600 metres would be beyond Daysee Doom.

“Daysee will be tested going up to the 1600 but I expect her to handle it. It’s only another furlong from the 14, she’s pretty much at her peak now,” Quinton said.

Daysee Doom has shaded her stablemate in both their head-to-head clashes this year, firstly in the Group Two Emancipation Stakes (1500m) in March when they were second and third respectively behind Zanbagh.

Quinton was again loath to split the mares, who work independently of each other.

“They’ve both won a Group two and a Group Three,” he said.

“They’ve come through the Pendant terrific. I couldn’t be happier with them.”

Dixie Blossoms won the Angst en route to a fifth in the Group One Myer Classic (1600m) last October and another trip to Melbourne beckons, with her close rival to accompany her this time.

While Daysee Doom will have her regular jockey, Quinton’s apprentice Andrew Adkins aboard, the in-form Kerrin McEvoy is booked to ride Dixie Blossoms for the first time because Corey Brown has another commitment.

“That’s no concern,” Quinton said. “She’s easy to ride and Kerrin’s a champion jockey.”

Bookmakers agree Daysee Doom should have no problem with the distance with the mare the $4.60 favourite in the TAB’s first market ahead of Dixie Blossoms at $5.

The Chris Waller-trained Dawn Wall and the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained My True Love are both at $8.

There were 18 nominations taken on Monday for the Angst which is for mares only.
