Paradoxium has completed his final serious piece of work ahead of Saturday’s BJ McLachlan Stakes at Eagle Farm, leaving his trainer confident the colt is primed to defend his position at the top of Magic Millions markets.
The Bjorn Baker-trained youngster tuned up with a sharp gallop at Warwick Farm on Tuesday before being transported north, arriving in Brisbane on Christmas Eve.
“He travelled overnight so he has arrived at Eagle Farm, and I’m excited about Saturday,” Baker said.
“He worked with a mate on Tuesday, and his work was really good. Rachel King rode him, (regular jockey) Jason Collett is away, and he looked to recover very well.”
Paradoxium first caught the eye when finishing a strong fourth on debut in the Breeders’ Plate (1000m) in October before taking a major step forward with a commanding win at Wyong on December 10.
That performance installed him as the market leader for the $2 million Magic Millions Classic (1200m), with Baker chasing a third success in the Gold Coast feature after Unencumbered (2014) and O’ Ole (2024).
While O’ Ole completed her build-up in Sydney, Baker has followed the same path taken by Unencumbered, who won at Wyong before completing the B J McLachlan Stakes–Magic Millions Classic double.
Baker said the scheduling of the Queensland races this season had worked in Paradoxium’s favour.
“It’s individual to the horse,” Baker said.
“The year Unencumbered won, there was a shorter turnaround and now we’ve got three weeks, so it works a lot better. In terms of the preparation, this year we’re a lot happier.”
The colt will stretch out to 1200 metres for the first time on Saturday, which Baker concedes is a slight unknown.
“It’s always a bit of a question mark with a two-year-old, but he’s had a good base,” he said.
“He had two trials into that race, and I think he’s ready to run a good race.”
Baker also has Masvingo still in contention for the Magic Millions, with the filly set to chase qualification when she contests an 1100m juvenile race at Randwick on Saturday.
“She will improve a lot from Wyong. Even if she runs second or third, up to 1200 (at the Gold Coast) she will be really well suited,” Baker said.
Amor Victorious was a dual acceptor for Sydney and Brisbane and Baker confirmed the gelding will take his place in the Seven Members Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm after pleasing him following his sixth in The Ingham (1600m).
