Pallaton poised to bloom in The Rosebud 2025

Jockey Tommy Berry is eager to see talented colt Pallaton return to the track with a winning performance in Saturday’s Listed Rosebud (1100m) at Rosehill. Berry had previously labelled Pallaton as Michael Freedman’s best two-year-old colt, and he showed that potential with an impressive debut win at Randwick late last year. However, the youngster’s next two runs didn’t go to plan, with Berry explaining that circumstances were against him on both occasions.

While Freedman later celebrated Golden Slipper glory with Marhoona, Pallaton was originally among the stable’s top hopes. Berry said fitness was lacking in his second start, and a minor setback before his third saw him race too keenly. “As an early two-year-old, we thought he was our best colt,” Berry said. “He was his own worst enemy towards the end of his prep.”

This time in, Pallaton has been fitted with a crossover noseband to help with his racing manners, and the results have been encouraging. He’s won both trials leading in, including a strong showing on a heavy 9 track at Randwick. “We’ve always held him in high regard, and he’s had two really nice trials, so we’re confident heading into the weekend,” Berry said.

Drawn the inside gate in a small six-horse field, Pallaton gets every chance to make a statement. “Now we just need to see him do it on race day,” Berry said. “Saturday’s his opportunity.”

Berry also rides Our Gold Hope in the Captivant @ Kia Ora Handicap (1400m). Trained by Robert and Luke Price, she has a strong CV, including a runner-up finish in the 2024 Queensland Oaks and a close Group 2
