Horse Racing News: Ouroboros lands breakthrough win

Ourbooros may have saved himself from a gelding operation with his hard-fought win at Caulfield.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained two-year-old landed his first win at career start number four when successful in the Quayclean Handicap (1200m) on Saturday.

Price spoke pre-race of the possibility of sending Ouroboros to be gelded if again beaten on Saturday.

“He’d had a number of starts and had been unable to win and tell us he was a good colt,” Price said.

“But he did a good job today as he was exposed the whole way. He did it early, the sectionals looked fast, he did it late, so it was a pretty strong display over 1200 metres.

“I’ve have to speak to the team and ask what they want to do.”

Ridden by Craig Newitt, Ouroboros ($7.50) scored by a length from the $4.80 equal favourite Wolfy with Orion The Hunter ($26) a short-neck away third.

Ouroboros was backing up from finishing third at Flemington last Saturday.

Price said Ouroboros had been a trouble-free colt and confirmed his start on Saturday after a sprint up on Friday morning.

“I had a look at a blood picture and thought, ‘gee that’s a very relaxed blood picture’, so he needed to do something and had a little dash up yesterday morning,” Price said.

“The horse did a good job after racing up on the speed.”

Price said the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 19 could be on the agenda, although the co-trainer was a little concerned with the four-week gap between runs.

Newitt described Ouroboros as a lovely colt that can get excited, but overall is very well-mannered.

“He’s very well-mannered and gets a little excited, a little bit hot, but the longer I was on him the more relaxed he became,” Newitt said.

“From the wide gate he used his good natural speed to sit outside the leader, I cuddled him around the corner, and then he put the leader away pretty quick.

“I could hear Ollie (Damien Oliver on Sensical) coming, but when he got in range, he gave a good kick.”
