Oakleigh Plate History, Past Results, Winners and Odds

The Oakleigh Plate is a Group 1 horse race held each Autumn in Melbourne at Caulfield Racecourse.  This event is run over 1100 metres and plays an important role as one of three Group 1 races on Blue Diamond Stakes Day.  The Oakleigh Plate is worth $400,000 in prizemoney and has been raced since 1884, making it one of the oldest events on the Australian racing calendar.

The Oakleigh Plate was raced over a distance of 6 furlongs between 1884 and 1972, with Malua taking out the inaugural event.  While it has not been won by many of the biggest names in Australian racing, the Oakleigh Plate was won by Wakeful in 1901, Power Duke in 1960, Placid Ark in 1987, and Schillaci in 1992.

In more recent times, winners of this event include Fastnet Rock in 2005, Snitzel in 2006, Unddue in 2007, Weekend Hustler in 2008, Swiss Ace in 2009, Starspangledbanner in 2010, Eagle Falls in 2011, Woorim in 2012, and Mrs Onasis in 2013.  While mainly won in the past by good if not outstanding horses, the Oakleigh Plate has been getting more and more attention over the last few years.

The Oakleigh Plate plays a vital role as part of Blue Diamond Stakes Day, the biggest Autumn race day at Caulfield Racecourse each year.  This event has become the premier sprinting event of the Caulfield Autumn Racing Carnival, with winners difficult to pick in recent times due to a capacity field of horses, many of who are a genuine chance to win.

The 2013 Oakleigh Plate was won by Mrs Onassis, with Facile Tigre in second position and Spirit Of Boom coming home in third.  This event is held on Blue Diamond Stakes Day, where the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes and Group 1 Futurity Stakes are joined by the Group 2 St George Stakes, Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes, Group 2 Autumn Classic, Group 3 Mannerism Stakes, and Zeditave Stakes.
