A two-year-old filly bred for speed has lived up to her pedigree with a debut sprint victory at Flemington.

The well-named Oakleigh Girl produced a performance of sustained speed to win Tuesday’s Group Three 7News Stakes (1000m) at Flemington, the opening race on Melbourne Cup day.

Oakleigh Girl is by Oakleigh Plate winner Snitzel out of another Oakleigh Plate winner Miss Kournikova and trainer Danny Bougoure rates the filly the fastest he has trained.

“I’m not saying she’s the best but she’s the fastest,” said Bougoure, who trained outstanding sprinter Falvelon.

The $2 million Magic Millions Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast in January is the main mission for Oakleigh Girl who is likely to have one more start in between.

“She’ll have a week off now and then go back home (to Brisbane),” the trainer said.

“She’ll then go straight into work and get ready for the Magic Millions.

“For a two-year-old filly she’s got a fantastic attitude. She’s totally bombproof.”

Oakleigh Girl won by 1-1/4 lengths over Top Dolly with 1-1/2 lengths to Singularity third.

Oakleigh Girl’s win was the perfect start to Melbourne Cup day for Craig Newitt who will ride Foreteller in the main race.

Newitt won the 2006 Oakleigh Plate on Snitzel.

“I had a bit of luck on the sire and she’s just a beautiful little filly,” Newitt said of Oakleigh Girl.

“She’s absolutely foolproof. She’s a nice filly to stay with.”
