No Effort gets her black type win at Caulfield races

The dreams of Gavin Bedggood have been realised with the win of No Effort at Caulfield.

Bedggood had picked out Saturday’s Listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) as the race most suitable to give No Effort all-important ‘black type’ status.

Taking up her customary front runners’ role, No Effort ran her rivals into the ground, although Bedggood noted that a number of Saturday’s opposition were still in the early stages of their spring campaigns.

Ridden by Beau Mertens, No Effort ($21) scored by a long-neck from Ziegfeld ($6) with Tralee Rose ($6) a length off third.

No Effort had raced through the winter months and registered wet-track victories at Sandown and Caulfield along with placings at The Valley and at her most recent outing on good ground at Caulfield.

Bedggood it was pleasing to see the mare progress from a four-time city winner to now having that black type on her page.

“To get a stakes’ win next to her name is fantastic,” Bedggood said.

“The owners are breeders, so she’ll stay with them forever now.

“It is a massive effort from everyone at home and Beau gave her a great ride.”

Bedggod said the obvious plan was to return to Caulfield in three weeks to tackle the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and again try and use her fitness to land another stakes’ race victory.

But the trainer said he would let the dust settle, see how the mare recovers from Saturday’s race before planning any further.

“But I think we’ve got to keep pushing forward, I guess,” Bedggood said.

“Any rain is a bonus with her, but we didn’t get that today.

“Obviously these horses are going to get fitter, but she makes her own luck on speed.”
