Regal Zeus overcame a dramatic build-up to Saturday’s Golden Mile at Bendigo, producing a gutsy performance to claim his first Stakes win for trainer John McArdle.
Concerns were raised earlier in the week when the gelding returned an abnormal blood profile on Thursday. Fortunately, results had normalised by Friday, and he was cleared to run.
Just before the race, he caused more concern after playing up in the barriers, requiring a final veterinary inspection which once again cleared him to start.
Despite the setbacks and stepping up from 1200m to 1600m without a run last week, the son of Zoustar led all the way to land the $200,000 Listed Golden Mile.
“He had a little bit of a blood (issue) Thursday afternoon, it was only very slight, but we spoke to the stewards and we reblooded him yesterday and it was OK yesterday afternoon,” McArdle explained.
“He almost was a scratching. It’s probably not his usual routine to go from 1200 to 1600, but he was prepped up for the Victoria Handicap last week but he drew terrible.
“He’s just an incredibly tough horse.”
Starting at $7, Regal Zeus held off Smokin’ Princess ($6) by a short head, with outsider Arran Bay ($31) finishing third, 1-1/4 lengths away.
Jamie Mott, who partnered Regal Zeus, completed a stellar afternoon after also riding Wonder Boy to victory in the $200,000 Listed Bendigo Guineas and Title Fighter in the BM84 earlier.
“He got a lot of pressure early, he had to absorb that, which he can do and he was out on his feet at the 150 but it just shows you what a tough racehorse he is,” Mott said.
“To ride three winners on Bendigo Mile Day for three Mornington trainers who support me is fantastic.
“It’s a long drive home, but I’m sure each one will be pleased.”
Regal Zeus can’t be run down in the Golden Mile!
