Racing officials have moved quickly to save an important lead-up race to the Doncaster Mile in the wake of a Newcastle washout.
The Group Three Newmarket Handicap has been included as part of Saturday’s Golden Slipper meeting, creating a 10-race card at Rosehill for one of the biggest days in Australian racing.
It will be run as race 10 at 6.25pm while a Provincial Championships Qualifier has been added to Sunday’s Wyong card.
Stewards were forced to call off the Newcastle meeting after heavy rain on Wednesday morning made the track too dangerous.
“With the water sitting there and not draining, sitting on top … it was unsafe to race on,” steward Marc Van Gestel said.
He said jockeys were unanimous in agreeing with the decision to call off the meeting.
Newcastle Jockey Club chairman, Geoff Barnett, said he was disappointed the meeting couldn’t go ahead but he believed stewards had no other option.
“The going was inconsistent right across the track and naturally jockeys would have wanted to be on
the better going,” he said.
Newcastle hosted eight races on the Beaumont track last Saturday and racing has been restricted to the inside track while the course proper is being rebuilt at a cost of $11 million.
