Munce team is zipped and set for Magic Millions 2026 Day

While two of the top four chances in the Magic Millions 2yo Classic market showcased their credentials at the Gold Coast on Saturday, two others took a lower-profile path, including Zip Lock, who completed a quieter assignment earlier in the day.

The Hellbent colt stamped himself as a serious contender for the $3 million feature when he claimed the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on December 27 and now sits equal second favourite alongside Shiki at $7.

Co-trainer Corey Munce said he has been pleased with how the colt has progressed since that performance.

“We brought him to the Gold Coast for a gallop on Saturday morning,” Munce said.

“No land speed records were broken but the whole objective was for him to have a look at the track and imitate a race meeting so he passed with flying colours, pulled up very well and we’re very happy with him.

“He’s going to run a bold race.”

Zip Lock was transported by truck from Brisbane to the Gold Coast for the gallop before heading straight home again, a calculated move that has also helped ease the disappointment of losing Cool Archie, who was shaping as a strong Magic Millions 3yo Guineas chance before injury ended his campaign.

“It is bittersweet but this horse, we feel, is doing a little bit more than what Cool Archie did at the same point in time and all I know that this horse will run a heck of a race next week.”

Race favourite Warwoven ($2) further strengthened his grip on the market with an authoritative win at Eagle Farm on January 3.

Warwoven recorded a Racing and Sports rating of 109 in that victory, matching the figure Zip Lock achieved in his B.J. McLachlan Stakes success.

The Munce stable will also be doubly represented in the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares (1300m), with Listed Nudgee Stakes (1300m) winner Lonhro’s Queen joined by Magic Millions Rising Stars 3&4yo F&M Plate (1300m) heroine Poster Girl.

Markets are open with leading Australian betting sites for Magic Millions Day, with the juvenile feature shaping as one of the most competitive in recent years.

At $11 in all-in betting, Chris Munce conceded Poster Girl is far better suited to shorter trips after previously being aimed at Oaks-style races.

“Lonhro’s Queen was originally heading out for a spell after her last run but being eligible for a wildcard entry into this race we’re heading there,” Corey said.

“She has been a revelation since coming here and has fitted into the Queensland lifestyle beautifully.

“There’s nothing wrong with her and she pulled up well.”

Rachel King will again partner Lonhro’s Queen, who is the $6 equal favourite.
