Chris Waller is shaping up for a potential second triumph in the Australasian Oaks (2000m) after promising filly Movin Out claimed her first Australian win at Mornington on Saturday.
The New Zealand-bred filly produced a powerful finish to capture the Mornington Guineas (1600m), surging past her rivals under jockey Ben Melham to record a dominant 2-½ length victory. Storm Season ($6) ran second with Fear No Evil ($5.50) finishing narrowly in third.
Having started her career in New Zealand, Movin Out had two runs in Sydney before relocating to Waller’s Melbourne base. Saturday marked her first start in Victoria, and her display suggested she’s ready for top-level company.
Waller’s Melbourne representative Lizzie Collett confirmed the filly only arrived in Victoria earlier in the week, but has settled in well ahead of a tilt at next Saturday’s Group 1 feature in Adelaide.
“She’s a quirky character and everyone in the Melbourne stable and Sydney stable would agree with that,” Collett said.
“She did everything right today. She settled, she relaxed, she was quiet and settled in the mounting yard, so I was very happy with her.
“The plan is hopefully to go to the Oaks next week in Adelaide.
“We’ll give her a quiet week. Treat her quietly, take her to the beach a couple of times, let her rest and recover, and then hopefully she travels up on Thursday night.”
Waller has previously claimed the Australasian Oaks with Egg Tart in 2017, and Movin Out could be his next big chance. She debuted in Australia with a fourth over 1500m before stepping up to Group 1 level in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m), where she ran well without winning.
Melham, who guided her to Saturday’s impressive win, said he’d be more than happy to follow her to Adelaide, believing she’ll handle the rise in trip comfortably if she settles in the run.
