Tony and Calvin McEvoy may have been interstate preparing for Calvin’s wedding, but that didn’t stop them celebrating another spring highlight after Motorsports captured the $250,000 Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.
The training duo watched the event from a hotel in South Australia with family and friends as wedding festivities for Calvin and his fiancé Demi commenced earlier than planned.
Regular stable rider and wedding guest Harry Coffey partnered the Street Boss filly and knew the victory added extra significance ahead of the big day.
“We’ve got a big day tomorrow with the McEvoy clan and I’m happy to be still invited to the wedding after that,” Coffey joked.
“I’d be saying there’d be a pretty rowdy pub in Adelaide somewhere right now.”
Motorsports, sent out the $4 favourite, proved a class above, drawing clear to defeat $17 chance Recuperato by three-quarters of a length, with Regeneration ($6.50) a length further back.
The win continued a golden run for the McEvoys, whose headline act Half Yours completed the Caulfield–Melbourne Cup double with Jamie Kah only weeks earlier.
Coffey was thrilled to be back on Motorsports on raceday after trialling her earlier in the preparation, having missed her debut ride due to family commitments.
“I was lucky enough and fortunate enough to find her when she swapped from James Cummings to the McEvoy team, but unfortunately I couldn’t ride her at her first start because my baby was due the day she ran at Ballarat,” he said.
“I put that aside and, luckily enough for me, Luke was suspended and I was able to rejoin and get back on her back.
“It’s good of Godolphin and the McEvoys to allow me to do that as she’s a ripping filly.
“She’s a pleasure to ride, she does things right and she has a turn of foot. That’s everything you want from a horse.”
