Things have taken a turn for the better for premier Brisbane trainer Robert Heathcote with Fillydelphia taking out the Listed $100,000 Sunshine Coast Cup.
By his own standards, Heathcote has been having a lean trot but Fillydelphia ($9) responded to a fine ride from Damian Browne in Sunday’s 1400m feature.
She beat Benny’s Buttons ($5.50) by 1-1/2 lengths with Club Command ($2.80) a long neck third.
Heathcote said Fillydelphia had jarred up at her previous start at Doomben six weeks ago and was given an ease up.
“I had intended to run her in the Bernborough Stakes on New Year’s Eve but I have to own up, I forgot to nominate her. But it gave her an extra couple of weeks off,” Heathcote said.
“It hasn’t been a super racing season for us.”
Fillydelphia finished second in the Sunshine Cup last year on a track that was soaked by record rain.
“She deserved that win today and that was one of her best wins,” Heathcote said.
Fillydelphia will now get the chance to target the better winter races after missing some of her targets last year when she poked herself in the eye with a blade of grass.
“She will get her chance this winter in races like the Group One Tatt’s Tiara and the other mares races,” Heathcote said.
Fillydelphia has now won 11 races and $580,000 prize money.
Earlier, apprentice Tegan Harrison completed a big weekend when she landed Queen of the Lochs ($3.80) a winner in the Shadforth Civil Three Year Old (1000m).
Harrison won the Listed Nudgee Quality on the Mick Mair-trained Tukiyo on Saturday.
