Mosheen wins 2012 Randwick Guineas

Robert Smerdon trained Mosheen has made it back to back Group 1 wins after taking out today’s Randwick Guineas in emphatic style after another beautiful ride by inform jockey Danny Nikolic.

Mosheen settled mid field and was behind a wall of horses coming into the straight although finished too well to beat Said Com who looked to have the race won after going past race favourite Manawanui at the 100m mark. Laserhawk ends his unbeaten streak but was very gallant in defeat running third and looked after looking a winning chance at the 150m mark.

Outstanding filly Mosheen landed her third Group One success when she came with a barnstorming finish to win the Randwick Guineas on Saturday.

Aided by another superb ride from Danny Nikolic, Mosheen swooped home from worse than midfield to beat Said Com and Laser Hawk.

The win at the elite level in the 1600m feature followed successes in the Group One Australian Guineas at Flemington two weeks ago and her demolition job when winning last spring’s VRC Oaks by nine lengths.

It was the Fastnet Rock filly’s sixth win from 13 starts which have also yielded five placings for prize money in excess of $2.38 million.

“She’s done everything we’ve thrown at her,” trainer Robert Smerdon said.

“She’s got a great turn of foot.

“She’s got a great constitution.”

Nikolic became the first jockey to win the Randwick Guineas twice after partnering Metal Bender to victory in 2009.

“She’s just got the gears,” he said.

“From about the 1200 (metres) I knew I was going to be hard to beat.

“She’s just my little class act.

“She’s making me look good.”
