Morrison celebrates rich maiden victory

Former jockey Lacey Morrison scored the biggest win of her fledgling career as a trainer when a horse she described as “nutso” won Australia’s richest maiden on Saturday.

Anymore ($31) stormed to a 1-3/4 length victory over The Yowie ($9) with another neck to Snippets Land ($6) in the $100,000 Maiden Plate (1200m) at the Gold Coast.

Morrison was one of Queensland’s most successful female jockeys before she was badly injured in a race fall in 2008.

She then had a stint as a steward before she was given a clearance to resume riding in 2012.

“I was two months short of 12 months back in the saddle when I had another fall and that put me out of riding for good,” she said.

Morrison now trains 10 horses which were formerly handled by John Dann and has had seven winners from 27 starters in the past three months.

“That was only a maiden but it was a big maiden. I must admit I don’t like Anymore as he is a bit `nutso’ and he has thrown me off three times,” Morrison said.

“He has talent but he is mad. I also must admit I only gave him a place chance in that field.”

Anymore is by the now-deceased sire All Bar One and was the cheapest horse in the field having been passed in for $4000 at the 2012 Gold Coast July Sales.
