Moment to Treasure for Laurie in 2025 Australian Oaks

Chris Waller finally saw justice served in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes as Via Sistina powered to a convincing win, 12 months after narrowly missing out in circumstances beyond her control.

In last year’s race, the star mare finished runner-up to Pride Of Jenni, who was allowed to establish an unassailable lead. This time, with that rival not lining up, Via Sistina arrived with intent and backed it up with a commanding performance at Randwick.

“She missed the race last year. We just miscalculated and full credit to Pride Of Jenni and Declan Bates and Ciaron (Maher), they won the race and they pulled our pants down,” Waller reflected.

Her 1-3/4 length defeat of Dubai Honour on Saturday provided sweet redemption for Waller, who admitted, “It does. It was a tough day that day.”

Now an eight-time Group 1 winner since her arrival in Australia, seven of those coming this season, Via Sistina continues to show her class and durability.

“We’re still getting to know her. She is well into her twilight years but it’s scary really, how good she is,” Waller said.

Though slow to begin, James McDonald never panicked, guiding her patiently through the field before finding daylight and unleashing a devastating turn of foot.

“There was one little worrying moment. I thought the one I was following was going to kick for a gap and he just didn’t go for it, and I ended up back off him,” McDonald said.

“But she was superior. Once I got those gaps, she sliced through and went bang.

“You could poke holes in her performances coming into today because she hasn’t been winning by big margins, but that’s the type of horse she is now. She only does what she has to.”

Tom Marquand offered no excuses for Dubai Honour’s defeat after a wide run, admitting, “Had a horrible run around. Whether it would have been enough to turn it around I don’t know.”

Tom Kitten produced a strong finish for third at $15, while Ceolwulf ran on gamely from last to secure fifth.

Waller’s afternoon was made even more special when Fangirl claimed the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m), completing a memorable double.

“It is special and its great to have the family here,” he said.

“It’s Sydney’s biggest day of racing. Everest is catching up but this is our big day.

“The good horses are here and there is some international flavour as well, which is great.”
