A return to racing against her own sex looks ideal for Mollynickers as she lines up in the Brian Beattie Handicap (1420m) at Flemington this Saturday.
Trainers Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, along with apprentice Luke Cartwright, will be aiming to build on their recent momentum, having recorded a winning treble at Sandown on May 24 and another victory at the same track last weekend.
Mollynickers has been competing against male rivals in recent starts, and Coleman believes the drop back to mares’ grade is perfectly timed.
“Her last couple of runs have been super,” Coleman said. “She’s going to the race in good order. It’s a good race on form, but she was up against the boys last start and ran well.
“I think if she gets a little bit of luck in running from a slightly awkward draw, it might be chance to pick another one up.”
As a three-year-old, Mollynickers earned Stakes placings in the The Vanity and Kewney Stakes, both held at Flemington, and ran fourth in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes last spring.
She returned to the winner’s circle in January with a benchmark 84 win at Geelong before being freshened for this campaign.
Her recent form includes a runner-up finish at Caulfield and another strong second at Sandown.
“She was honest and brave, so you can’t be too disheartened by that,” Coleman said. “But she’s at that mark in her races now where she needs everything to fall her way.”
With Cartwright’s claim, Mollynickers will carry 55kg in Saturday’s event.
