Memsie Stakes Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2021

The Listed Ramornie Handicap headlines the program at Grafton on Wednesday as a capacity field of sprinters lineup with $200,000 on offer.

The Snowden’s are looking to win the race for the second year in a row with Poetic Charmer, while Garibaldi and the Michael Costa-trained Phobetor are both jostling for favouritism in the market.

Fifty Stars

Fifty Stars returns from a spell and looks to have plenty of options after drawing kindly in barrier 6.

Tom Dabernig’s seven-year-old hasn’t won a race since he claimed the Group 1 Australian Cup last year at Flemington but does warrant consideration as a three-time winner over 1400m.

He dug very deep to run second to Cox Plate favourite Zaaki last time out in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes on the Gold Coast and has also run well fresh in the past.

Behemoth

Dual Group 1 winner Behemoth is looking to defend his crown after taking out last year’s Memsie Stakes by a comfortable margin over Mr Quickie.

The son of All Too Hard has taken an identical leadup after resuming to win the Group 3 Spring Stakes at Morphettville where he again showed his class over the final 200m to beat home Saturday’s rival Beau Rossa.

This is a tougher assignment, but the fact he’s a two-time track and distance winner makes him one of the main chances.

Streets of Avalon

Dual Group 1 winner Streets Of Avalon is back for another crack at the Memsie after failing to fire in last year’s edition.

The son of Magnus has taken an almost identical leadup into the race after resuming to run second in the Bletchingly last month before a disappointing performance in the PB Lawrence Stakes two weeks ago.

The Shane Nichols trained Streets Of Avalon is definitely worth forgiving on that performance with five wins and three placings to his name over the 1400m at Caulfield, and could benefit from a change in jockey with Dean Yendall on board.

Archedemus

Archedemus is proven over 1400m, but is likely to find this tough going following a disappointing return to the races when seventh over the track and trip in the PB Lawrence Stakes.

He tends to go better with a run under his belt, but is tough to entertain after drawing a wide gate.

Red Can Man

Red Can Man has been racing well of late, albeit it against much easier opposition.

The five-year-old took out the Group 3 John Monash Stakes at Caulfield second-up and has since gone on to run a place in Group 2 PB Lawrence over Saturday’s track and distance.

He would need to produce his very best to trouble some of these, but his two runs at Group 1 level during the Perth Summer Racing Carnival were encouraging.

Sansom

Sansom burst back onto the scene with a narrow win over Streets Of Avalon in the Bletchingly last month but failed to produce that same turn of foot when last in the PB Lawrence Stakes over further.

He could be worth forgiving on that run as the rails draw didn’t allow him much room, but this still looks a tough field to line up against in his Group 1 debut.

Aegon

Aegon will make his return to the races in the Memsie Stakes hoping to extend his unbeaten first-up record to 3-0.

The New Zealand import won the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas across the ditch during the spring before winning the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes on debut at Rosehill earlier in February.

The Baker-trained four-year-old failed to overcome a wide position when 12th in the Doncaster Mile but is much better suited getting back to 1400m where he is also undefeated.

Beau Rossa

Beau Rossa has been up for a while but has held his form nicely making it three wins from six starts since returning to work.

Will Clarken’s four-year-old won the Listed Lightning Stakes at Morphettville two back and was unlucky to be denied on the line by the fast-finishing Behemoth in the Spring Stakes a fortnight ago.

He was no match in The Goodwood earlier in the year, but the son of Unencumbered has been racing well of late to suggest he can run a place.

Colette

Colette resumed to win the Group 2 Apollo Stakes over the same distance at Randwick during the autumn before going on to run second to Verry Elleegant in the Chipping Norton Stakes.

She wrapped up her prep two lengths off Nettoyer in the Queen of the Turf Stakes and has also had a trial heading into her Caulfield debut on Saturday.

The Hallowed Crown mare probably warrants more consideration over further, but she can’t be underestimated, especially with any rain about.

Tofane

Tofane is looking to make it a Group 1 hat-trick in her return to the races after taking out the Stradbroke Handicap and the Tatt’s Tiara over 1400m at Eagle Farm during the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

The Michael Maroney-trained mare has made four starts for three wins over this trip and has also won at Caulfield in the past.

It can take a run for her to produce her best, but the daughter of Ocean Park is no doubt one of the major players over her preferred distance with Craig Williams steering from a good gate.

Inspirational Girl

Inspirational Girl will make her long-awaited return to the races on Saturday after nearly nine months off the scene.

The Western Australian-trained mare claimed the Railway Stakes by a big margin at Ascot in her Group 1 debut over the summer before wrapping her prep up as a clear runner-up to Truly Great in the Kingston Town Stakes.

The six-year-old is a four-time winner over 1400m and also flies fresh, making her one of the top value plays in the field.

Sierra Sue

Sierra Sue can make it a hat-trick in her return to the top level on Saturday.

The Busuttin and Young trained Sierra Sue won the Mildura Cup last month by a comfortable margin and was equally impressive over the 1400m at Caulfield two weeks ago winning the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes.

She’s unplaced in two starts at Group 1 level but warrants plenty of respect with four wins to her name over the distance.
