Melham makes even bigger mark on Melbourne Cup 2025 Week

Melbourne Cup hero Jamie Melham has continued her memorable week, riding a running double early on Champions Day at Flemington.

Melham partnered the Peter Snowden-trained Need Some Luck to victory in the Listed Fisher Stakes, before returning to take out the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) aboard Sunset Park for Brad Widdup.

Still absorbing the magnitude of her Melbourne Cup win on Half Yours, Melham admitted the carnival had felt dreamlike.

“It still feels like a big dream,” Melham said.

“It’s very surreal. I’ve had a great few days with Mum and Dad and all the family. I’m looking forward to going home next week and letting it sink in.”

Sunset Park ($17) turned the tables on She’s A Hustler after their clash in the Group 3 Tesio Stakes at Moonee Valley, controlling the race from in front and drawing clear to win by 1-1/4 lengths.

The daughter of Sea The Stars has now won four of 11 starts, and Widdup said maturity and pedigree were combining at the right time.

“She came down for The Valley and was unlucky there, so we kept her here,” Widdup said.

“She’s had a bit of racing now and was very fit. Her pedigree is really starting to show.”

Earlier, Need Some Luck delivered valuable black type when claiming the Fisher Stakes. The Rubick gelding, a three-quarter brother to Chautauqua, had hinted at his talent during a Queensland winter campaign.

“He’s a talented horse and has been showing us this,” Snowden said.

Need Some Luck ($7) finished 1-3/4 lengths clear of De Bergerac ($7.50), with favourite Big Swinger ($2.90) in third.
