Melbourne Cup winning riders named for Shergar Cup

The past two Melbourne Cup-winning riders, Michelle Payne and Kerrin McEvoy, will compete on opposing teams in the Shergar Cup international jockeys’ challenge at Ascot.

Payne, who became the first female to win the Melbourne Cup when she steered Prince Of Penzance to victory in 2015, was unable to take up her position on the Girls team last year because of injury.

This year she will join Canada’s Emma-Jayne Wilson and Britain’s reigning champion apprentice Josephine Gordon in the competition in August.

Her brother-in-law McEvoy, winner of the 2016 Cup on Almandin, will compete for the Rest Of The World alongside South African Anthony Delpech and Japan’s Keita Tosaki.

Ryan Moore, Jamie Spencer and Neil Callan make up the team for Great Britain and Ireland while Frankie Dettori and Germans Alexander Pietsch and Adrie de Vries will represent Europe.

Payne is also scheduled to ride the Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained Kaspersky at the Royal Ascot meeting in June.

Chapple-Hyam is setting Kaspersky for the Queen Anne Stakes with a view to a trip to Australia for the Emirates Stakes on the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival.
