Melbourne Cup 2026: Chris Waller fined $50,000 over race day treatment

Champion trainer Chris Waller has been fined $50,000 following the stewards’ decision to withdraw Asterix from the 2026 Melbourne Cup at Flemington.

Acting on information from the Racing Victoria Compliance Assurance Team, stewards interviewed Waller concerning the administration of Penetrene to the forelegs of Asterix on race morning.

Penetrene is a topical product designated as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic liniment, used for alleviating muscle strains, sprains, and soreness.

Stewards took evidence from Waller, his stable personnel, Tim George from the RV CAT team, and Dr Edwina Wilkes, RV’s regulatory vet, after which Asterix was withdrawn from the Cup at 10:33 am.

Waller pleaded guilty under Australian Racing Rule 227 (a), and after considering submissions, RV stewards imposed the $50,000 fine.

In assessing the penalty, stewards accepted that the application of Penetrene by a Waller staff member was made in error. However, they were mindful of the seriousness of the matter and that Asterix was withdrawn from the Melbourne Cup.

Stewards also factored in Waller’s guilty plea and his excellent disciplinary record regarding similar offences.
