An impressive win on VRC Oaks day at Flemington has set promising filly Marmelo up for a shot at a Sydney Classic next year.

Marmelo came from last in Thursday’s Flemington Style Plate (1700m) to notch her second win from three starts, stamping herself as an ATC Australian Oaks prospect for the autumn.

The filly was the opening leg of an early race-to-race double for trainer Chris Waller and he insists with added maturity and strength next preparation Marmelo can continue to climb the ladder. 

“She’s an Oaks type for the autumn,” Waller said.

“Today was only her third start and she has had two good wins so she’s well on her way.”

Jockey Glyn Schofield allowed Marmelo, the $3 favourite who had to lump 59.5kg, to drift back to last in the nine horse field and rode a patient race on the daughter of Duke Of Marmalade.

Schofield saved ground entering the straight and the talented filly moved into the race before going away to score by a length over Savannah Moon ($6.50) with Brewing ($9.50) a long neck away third.

Waller prepared a Group One double on Derby day and Multilateral gave him his second Oaks day win in the Swisse Wellness Trophy (1800m).

The import brought up his fifth victory from nine starts in Australia with his long neck success over Adjuster, and maintained a perfect Melbourne record from three starts.

“He was bought as a maiden from England. He’s a thick-set, strong miler-type of horse but I think he will get 2000 metres,” Waller said of Multilateral.

“You can’t underestimate the staying ability that is in the English horses.

“He’s capable of a Listed win, but probably not yet.”
