Magnaspin’s return to winning form at Caulfield was the result of careful planning and a well-judged ride from Jamie Melham.
The Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin-trained galloper recorded his first victory since May last year when taking out the A Caulfield Kind Of Summer Handicap (2000m).
Melham sent Magnaspin forward shortly after the start and allowed him to dictate the tempo, with the gelding holding on gamely to defeat favourite Jenni’s Meadow by half a length, with Regal Lion a short-neck away in third.
Larkin said the stable had deliberately spaced the gelding’s runs this preparation to build fitness while encouraging him to settle.
“Last preparation he was wanting to get it over and done with and wasn’t finishing his races off,” Larkin said.
“We elected to give him a really good break. He had eight weeks in the paddock and we built him up nice and slowly so there was a lot of fitness benefit from each run.
“If you ask him for too much early he over-races, so to get him out to this trip we needed him to relax and settle, and he’s done that really well.”
Larkin credited Melham’s ride for allowing Magnaspin to control the race.
“You leg her on and you have a lot of confidence in the rider,” he said.
“She judged it beautifully, let him find his rhythm and rated him perfectly.”
The stable is now hopeful of targeting a suitable Listed race over 2000 metres, with punters able to follow upcoming options through leading Australian betting sites.
