Magic Wand wins the Mackinnon Stakes

Irish mare Magic Wand has denied Godolphin favourite Hartnell a winning farewell to racing in the Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington.

Backing up and dropping sharply in distance after running in the Melbourne Cup, Magic Wand defeated New Zealand mare Melody Belle in the weight-for-age race over 2000m.

It left Hartnell to take the minor placing as the nine-year-old heads into retirement after 58 starts delivered 13 wins and more than $7 million in earnings.
