Patience is often a vital ingredient in racehorse development, and trainer Annabel Archibald hopes that Mortal Halo can continue his upward trajectory heading into next month’s lucrative Magic Millions race day.
Once a wayward juvenile, the son of Better Than Ready secured his second career win in the Vinnie @ Yarraman Park Handicap (1500m) during Sunday’s unusual Rosehill program.
“We’ve always had a big opinion of him but as a two-year-old he just didn’t know where to put his legs,” Archibald said.
“He is better now and it is good to see him put them away.”
Mortal Halo ($3.20F) had to chase down the Chris Waller-trained Automne Tree ($8), scoring by half a length, with The Mona Lisa ($14) finishing a nose away in third.
“He looked almost a bit lost in front and I was happy when the other horse crossed in front and had something to chase down,” Archibald added.
Annabel and co-trainer Rob Archibald hope to progress the colt to the $3 million Magic Millions 3yo Guineas (1400m) on January 17, though they concede he may need another start to ensure his rating is high enough to secure a place in the field.
A brother to 2024 Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) winner Port Lockroy, Mortal Halo hails from a family the stable knows well, having also prepared his dam’s other winners Aeecee Beau and For Better.
“He’s one of the nicest colts I’ve sat on in a long time,” jockey Reece Jones said.
“He’s so professional and a gentleman.”
Mortal Halo failed to reach his $260,000 reserve at the 2024 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and is currently a $26 chance for the Gold Coast feature, headed by Group 1 JJ Atkins Stakes (1600m) winner Cool Archie at $3.
The Rosehill card was moved to Sunday after temperatures soared to 40 degrees on Saturday.
