The countdown to Magic Millions weekend is finally over as a capacity field of two-year-old’s step out on the Gold Coast with $2 million on the line.

This year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic looks to be one of the most wide-open contests we’ve seen in recent years and there is a case to be made for more than a handful.

Fillies have won eight of the last 11 editions of this race, so it’s no surprise to find the Chris Waller-trained She’s All Class headlining the top of the market.

Gai Waterhouse, meanwhile, is looking to claim her fifth Classic win with co-favourite Swift Witness on the back of last week’s dominant victory in the Aquis Gold Pearl.

Alpine Edge 

Alpine Edge can make it a hat-trick of wins on Saturday after taking out the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes and the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes last month at Eagle Farm.

The colt by Better Than Ready possesses a serious turn of foot, as we saw on Boxing Day when he wore down Baby Wong over the final furlong to win by half a length.

He loves to get back and run on and looks a genuine contender from this draw.

Finance Tycoon 

Finance Tycoon resumed with a narrow win in last week’s Aquis Gold Nugget ahead of Saturday’s rival Shaquero.

The two-year-old struggled to put away the Waller colt in the closing stages, but he can only improve on that performance with some added fitness now on his side.

The son of Written Tycoon won the Group 3 Maribyrong Plate on the short backup at Flemington back in November and he looks well-placed to claim Lindsay Park’s first Classic win since 1998.

Readily Availabull

Readily Availabull has had only the run one to date, but he isn’t to be underestimated.

The John Sargent-trained colt won the Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic at Ballarat on debut thanks to a well-timed ride from Michael Dee out wide and he maps to get a similar run in transit here from barrier seven.

Dee has retained the ride on Saturday and there was a lot to like about the two-year-old’s trial at Randwick last week. With luck on his side, he’s a decent each-way chance.

Shaquero

Shaquero won the Group 3 Breeders Plate at Randwick by over a length on debut and rates as another serious winning hope from the Waller yard.

He returned to the races in disappointing fashion two months later to run seventh in the BJ McLachlan Stakes at Eagle Farm, before re-entering calculations last week with a bold second to Finance Tycoon in the Aquis Gold Nugget.

Glen Boss said after the race that he wasn’t quite up to his best, so there’s some definite improvement to come from this colt. Providing he’s pulled up okay, the rails draw and the step up to the 1200m should suit him nicely.

Ghost Writer 

Ghostwriter won well on debut at Doomben over a touch shorter but has struggled to go on with it since.

The son of I Am Invincible finished sixth in the Golden Gift at Randwick back in November before returning a similar result on Boxing Day in the BJ McLachlan Stakes off a freshen-up.

Fitness is on his side, but he’s unlikely to find this any easier.

Baby Wong

Baby Wong has raced well without winning in his short career and has found the placings in all three of his runs up in Queensland.

The son of Press Statement just found one better last time out in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes at Eagle Farm where he was gunned down by the fast-finishing Alpine Edge for the second time in a row.

The winkers on seemed to help him settle after missing the start two runs back, and although he’s still a maiden, the recent form around this colt reads well.

Mishani Scandal

Mishani Scandal bolted in to win by three lengths on debut at Toowoomba but has struggled to repeat that performance since.

The gelding by Jet Spur was no match for some of these last week in the Aquis Gold Nugget when finishing seven lengths off the winner Finance Tycoon.

He never really got going in that run and looks a big question mark now over further.

Rambeau

Rambeau did well for third on debut in the Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic at Ballarat and appears to be making headway towards a breakthrough win.

The son of Brazen Beau went on to run fourth in the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes, right before an eye-catching second to Sweet Dolly when fresh in the Calaway Gal Stakes at Eagle Farm last month.

This is his toughest assignment to date, but a place isn’t entirely out of the question.

Fake Love

Fake Love has been freshened for her start in the Magic Millions Classic after running on for second behind Sweet Dolly in the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes last month at Eagle Farm.

The daughter of I Am Invincible won the Listed Debutant Stakes at Caulfield earlier in October and was far from disgraced when fourth in the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes a month later at Flemington.

The Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace-trained filly trialled beautifully last week under Glen Boss and the stable feel she is in top order ahead of her return to the races.

Boss will be tasked with retaining Maher and Eustace’s title after Away Game’s impressive 2YO Classic victory last year, but he does have his work cut out from barrier 20.

Mura Mura

Mura Mura has raced consistently without winning down in Sydney.

She debuted for third at Randwick over the 1000m and ran a big race for the same result in the Golden Gift second-up behind Sneaky Five.

She returned to work to finish second behind the impressive Ranch Hand at Warwick Farm and has done all of her racing on rain affected tracks. Would need to produce something special to win, but a place isn’t out of the question.

She’s All Class

She’s All Class lived up to her namesake second-up when she took out the Listed Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic by over four lengths.

The daughter of I Am Invincible ran a very bold third on debut at Randwick in the Victory Vein and there is no doubt she is one of the main dangers in this field.

Champion trainer Chris Waller has never won the Classic before, but he appears to have a fantastic chance with this filly. She’s looked very professional in both starts to date and will take a power of beating if James McDonald can offset the sticky draw.

Swift Witness 

Swift Witness fought out the minors on debut at Wyong behind She’s All Class before showing real improvement last week with a comfortable three-length win in the Aquis Gold Pearl.

The daughter by Star Witness showed enormous class to race clear after copping a bump into the straight, and after setting a new class record, she should see out the 1200m just fine on the short backup.

Adding the blinkers proved to be the trick last week as Gai Waterhouse hopes to add a fifth Magic Millions 2YO Classic trophy to the mantlepiece.

You’ll Be Mist

You’ll Be Mist has won two-from-four to start her career and maps to get a lovely run in this race just off the speed.

She’s turned in two impressive performances so far at the Sunshine Coast, the most recent of which came three weeks ago where she went on to score by three lengths ahead of Saturday’s rival Win Burn.

Looks a knockout chance at best from this draw.

Miss Hipstar

Miss Hipstar won on debut at Doomben by 1.5L before scoring by an even more impressive margin second-up at Ipswich over the 800m.

Kelly Schweida’s filly just weakened out of it last week in the Aquis Gold Pearl to finish third behind Swift Witness, but she should be better for the experience in what was her first look at the Gold Coast.

The 55kg of Larry Cassidy sticking aboard is a huge plus and a place would not surprise.

Queen Of Wizardry

Queen Of Wizardry ran a huge race on debut to beat home Win Burn and Ranch Hand over the 1200m at Eagle Farm.

She produced a huge turn of foot to swoop in late, but barrier 15 does make life difficult for apprentice Stephanie Thornton.

Princess Bojack

Princess Bojack was well-backed on debut at Eagle Farm and she did not disappoint winning by three-quarters of a length.

Her recent efforts haven’t been quite up to scratch though and the current triple-figure quote more than reflects that.

Ranch Hand 

Ranch Hand won well on debut at Warwick Farm where he put paid to the rest of the field in a comfortable three-length win.

The son of Fastnet Rock was heavily backed second-up at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago but failed to reward punters finishing third behind the swooping Queen Of Wizardry.

We saw him unleash an enormous turn of foot to win his maiden and he’ll likely take a power of beating if he can earn a spot as the first emergency.

Ruby Kisses

Ruby Kisses is the second emergency in the Magic Millions Classic. She’s found the placings twice in three starts, but she’d likely find this tough.

Mishani Enchanted

Mishani Enchanted has raced consistently since debuting back in October, but she’s unlikely to earn a start in this field as the third emergency.

Win Burn 

Win Burn has finished runner-up in both starts to date. He is the fourth emergency in Saturday’s field.

Glorious Ruby

Glorious Ruby has made only the one start to date and would need plenty of things to go her way as the fifth emergency.
