Magic Millions 2yo Classic 2013 – Wyong Tips

Only a small field of seven will line up for the Wyong M.M Classic but it’s a competitive field nevertheless. Early favourite is Sheer Style, the last start winner of the Ballarat MM Classic at $2.20. Prize-money from that victory sees the filly head the order of entry for the Magic Millions feature on the Gold Coast in January where in early markets, she is quoted a $9 chance. Out to keep her honest are Geromayo ($5.5) who ran second to Sheer Style last start and Unencumbered ($6.00), who comes off a strong last start win.

Magic Millions 2yo Classic Form Guide

1. UNENCUMBERED – N Berry (6)

The Testa Rossa (winner of the 99 Magic Millions) colt made it two wins from three starts with an impressive victory over 1000m at the Kensington circuit a fortnight ago. Settling at the tail of the field, he rounded up his opponents in a neat manner to win by a comfortable 1 ¼ lengths on the line. Out of the well performed mare Blizzardly – sixth in a Golden Slipper and winner at Listed level as a 2yo – the Bjorn Baker trained runner has certainly being living up to the potential his breeding would suggest. Will get back from the wide gate and will need to ensure he isn’t too far off them around as they turn, given the Wyong track tends to lend itself to those on pace.

2. GEROMAYO – S Baster (3)

The Mick Price colt kicked off his career in the Listed Debutant Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield in October. Drawing wide, he settled just worse then midfield and held his spot in the run to the line finishing fifth (3.4 lengths) behind Moonlight Hussler. The only starts since for the son of Charge Forward as been in the 2yo MM Classic at Ballart where, from a good draw, he settled closer to the speed and ran second to Sheer Style – who led, by a length. Will be better for having had the run the left-hand way of going and another good draw will see him take up a good position in the run. He will not have had to have made a great deal of improvement from his last run to be well in the mix here.

3. TOMMY – A Hyeronimus (1)

The Wicked Style colt figured several times in the Stewards Report after making his debut a fortnight ago at Kensington. He begun awkwardly, laid out in the run and his trainer Angela Davies reported he lost his tongue tie during the race. To finish fifth and only two lengths from Unencumbered then, wasn’t a bad result all considered. A half brother to Greytfilly who ran ninth in last year’s Magic Millions, he’ll need to ensure that from the inside gate, he gets away cleanly. Failing to do so could see him positioned in an awkward sport.

4. SHEER STYLE – B Shinn (2)

Snitzel filly who has shown plenty of toe at each of her three starts to date. She ran second on debut for Hawkesbury trainer Gary Frazier back in October when collared on the line by Bold Circle (Unencumbered third) before, a fortnight later, leading again but proving no match late for the impressive Earthquake, again finishing second and with a big gap to third. She then travelled south to Ballarat for the MM Classic where as the 9/10 favourite, she again led and held off all challenges to record a length win over Geromayo. Will no doubt take up the front-running role again and the Wyong track will suit her style. She should get them plenty to catch.

5. SPIRIT OF JOY – T Clark (5)

Gai Waterhouse’s filly stepped out a well supported 13/4 and set a slick pace when making her debut at Rosehill just short of three weeks ago. The daughter of Big Brown folded quickly in the last furlong of the 1100m race and finished fourth (5.6 lengths) behind Darley’s impressive and unbeaten filly, Memorial. She’ll be better for having had the experience of her first run and will also be looking to take up a forward position. Capable of sharp improvement.

6. FLY BUY FLY – L Henry (7)

The rank outsider of the field, the I Am Invincible filly will indeed have her work cut out for her judging by her two starts to date. She didn’t appear to handle the heavy conditions on debut and finished a well beaten second to last at Scone before returning to the same track and, on the drier surface, running second to Cityscape after leading for the majority of the race. Facing a big step up in class and from the widest gate, will struggle.

7. DATABLE – C Reith (4)

This filly comes from the first crop of All American and is out of the well bred mare First Date. She must have been showing her trainer Kris Lees some good signs who started the filly’s career in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick in early October. Settling just behind the speed, she was unable to improve her position in the straight and finished fifth (4.9 lengths) behind Alpha Miss. Her only trip the track since then as been for Newcastle barrier trial just over a week ago where she finished second (beaten 3 lengths) of five runners. She’ll get nice run behind the speed here and her chance to fill a place if good enough.

RACE OVERVIEW –

Although a small field, there is plenty of speed here obviously with Sheer Style, Spirit of Joy and possibly Tommy, all eager to take up the front running role. Trailing the speed from the outset should be Nathan Berry and Unencumbered. He got back last start but had raced handy his two previous effort and will not have to get as far back as he did last start. He should be in the right spot as they turn to launch is claim and if finishing effort of last start would suggest that a further 1000m, suits him well. Expect the Ballarat Quinella, Sheer Style and Geromayo – who will also get a lovely cart behind the leaders, to figure strong again.
