Legless Veuve out to press Australian Guineas claims

Legless Veuve is following the same path towards the 2017 Australian Guineas as the most recent filly to win the Group One race and will be out to stamp her credentials at Flemington.

The Stuart Webb-trained Legless Veuve beat the males first-up in the Manfred Stakes at Caulfield, emulating Mosheen in 2012 .

If she performs well in Saturday’s Group Three The Vanity for fillies, Webb says Legless Veuve will target the Australian Guineas (1600m) two weeks later.

“I think she’s a high-class filly who is hitting a medium year,” Webb said.

“There’s no stand-outs, and the stand-outs that are there are probably in Sydney. But we’ll get through Saturday first. She would still want to be very good again to warrant it.”

Mosheen was a close second in The Vanity before winning the Guineas, the Randwick Guineas and Vinery Stud Stakes that campaign.

“Mosheen actually got beaten in The Vanity, so hopefully we don’t do that.” Webb said.

The Robert Smerdon-trained Mosheen also won the VRC Oaks by nine lengths the previous spring.

Webb was associated with Mosheen as Smerdon’s assistant and said at the moment Legless Veuve could not yet be compared to her.

“They’re different fillies,” he said.

“Mosheen had come off the spring as a Group One winner. Obviously this filly hasn’t done that so she’s still got a while before we put them the same breath

“If she won an Australian Guineas you’d start working towards being measured up against fillies like that.”

Webb said Legless Veuve had come on since the Manfred and he can’t fault her going into Saturday, although she will giving her rivals weight.

The Webb-trained Wazzenme will be on trial for the Guineas in Saturday’s C S Hayes Stakes (1400m) and Webb said he would want to run in the first three to warrant going there.

He said the dual Group-placed colt had caught up fitness-wise to Legless Veuve in the past couple of weeks.

“He’s drawn barrier one. I think he’s going super, so fingers crossed,” Webb said.
