News:

Victorian jockey Jamie Mott begins a new chapter in his career at Warrnambool with his first ride over jumps.

Mott has no plans to give up flat riding and will combine both disciplines at Sunday’s meeting where he rides the Russell Cameron-trained Cottonwood Sky in the maiden hurdle.

The heavyweight jockey, who completed his mandatory 10 trials over obstacles last month, begins as a three-kilo claiming apprentice.

His desire to add jumps racing to his resume has been fuelled by trips to Ireland, the homeland of his fiancee and manager Carol Anne Brassil.

“Her father and brother-in-law train jumpers so every time I go over there I’m always schooling and getting a feel for it and I really like it,” Mott said.

“So I thought I might give it a go.”

The 26-year-old has ridden Cottonwood Sky to a Sandown barrier trial win and has been aboard in his two second placings on the flat this campaign.

Mott said flat racing would remain his No.1 priority and was looking forward to adding another string to his bow.

He won’t be the only dual purpose jockey riding this weekend with Adelaide’s Amy Herrmann riding Dumosa in Saturday’s hurdle at Morphettville and Free The Wind in a flat race on the program.
