Late Mail: Caulfield Horse Racing Tips – 2014 Easter Monday

Easter Monday racing in Victoria focuses solely on Caulfield, which will back up after last Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is dead and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit. The meeting will also see a couple of regally bred types stepping out, with Tracy’s Image, a daughter of Typhoon Tracy, and Belle Couture, the half sister to Black Caviar, each looking to break their maiden tag at start number two.

In the news:

Tracy’s Image failed to emulate her brilliant half-sister Typhoon Tracy on debut but trainer Peter Moody lost no sleep over her defeat.

Typhoon Tracy won her first five starts including the Group One Coolmore Classic in 2009 but Tracy’s Image was narrowly beaten over 1107m at Geelong on April 4.

However, Moody knows where he went wrong.

“I might have misread her a little bit and thought she could win over the short trip,” Moody said.

“She’s probably not as sharp as Typhoon Tracy was early so she was looking for more ground.”

Moody has stepped Tracy’s Image up to 1400m in Monday’s Guinot Skincare Plate at Caulfield where she is one of three half-sisters to superstars engaged at the meeting.

Black Caviar’s half-sister Belle Couture will run in the Elvis `Ricky’ Thurgood 34th Anniversary Plate (1200m) while La Amistad, a half-sister to triple Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva is an emergency in the MiStable Handicap (2000m).

By Redoute’s Choice out of Helsinge, Belle Couture fetched $2.6 million as a yearling and the Danny O’Brien-trained filly has had one start for a second at Bendigo in December last year.

Damien Oliver rode her on debut and will again partner the filly.

La Amistad will get up to a suitable trip for the first time this preparation if she gains a start in the MiStable Handicap.

Also by Redoute’s Choice, La Amistad scored impressive wins over 2200m at Ballarat and Bendigo before a reasonable effort in the Group Three Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington in the spring.

La Amistad has built fitness for her Caulfield target with two runs over shorter trips at Sandown.

Dwayne Dunn will ride La Amistad for Hawkes Racing if she gains a start at Caulfield.

Hawkes Racing has also accepted for a race at Echuca on Tuesday as a back-up plan for La Amistad.
