Last year’s winner to miss Caulfield Cup 2025

Last year’s Caulfield Cup hero Duke De Sessa will not get the chance to defend his crown, with connections opting to withdraw him from this year’s edition due to a minor issue.

Racing Victoria stewards confirmed on Friday that the Ciaron Maher-trained stayer has been officially scratched from the Group 1 feature over 2400m at Caulfield, scheduled for October 18, citing a minor setback in his preparation.

Duke De Sessa claimed a memorable win in the Caulfield Cup last spring under jockey Harry Coffey, delivering Maher his second victory in the prestigious staying event.

The stable had nominated a large contingent of 25 runners for the 2025 edition, with Duke De Sessa expected to be among the leading hopes before his withdrawal.

There are now 145 horses still entered for the Caulfield Cup, with late entries accepted until Tuesday, August 12.
