Lasqueti Spirit has produced one of the modern-day upsets of the Australian turf with her VRC Oaks win at Flemington.
Ridden a heady race by Sydney jockey Brenton Avdulla, Lasqueti Spirit set up a big lead in the middle stages and she never looked like being caught in the Classic despite starting at $101.
Lasqueti Spirit defeated Harlow Gold ($7) by 3-3/4 lengths with New Zealand filly Eleonora ($9) filling the minor placing.
Cox Plate placegetter Yankee Rose wound up 14th of the 15 runners as the $1.95 favourite, finishing more than 20 lengths from the winner.
“She hasn’t got class but she’s got class is every other aspect. She is a one batter and she loves it,” Lasqueti Spirit’s trainer Lee Curtis said.
