The Boss Lady opened her campaign with a bang and closed it with another emphatic victory, capping off a sensational preparation with success in the Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) at Pinjarra on Wednesday.
After starting her campaign with a win in the Roma Cup (1100m) at Ascot, Michael Lane’s standout mare notched up her third black-type triumph, following her victory in the Listed Jungle Dawn Classic (1400m) last November.
With Shaun McGruddy in the saddle, The Boss Lady surged from behind to edge out Magnificent Andy by a neck, with West Star finishing another neck behind in third place. The result brings her record to 11 wins from 20 starts and earnings approaching the $1 million mark.
Trainer Michael Lane was effusive in his praise, suggesting the mare’s best may still lie ahead. “I always said she would get better with age,” Lane told Tabradio. “I’ve got no doubt in my mind. I don’t think she’s at her peak yet. What we’ve seen this prep; she’s raised the bar. It won’t surprise me at all if she raises it again.”
He added, “She’s grown a lot in herself, and it wouldn’t surprise me if she came back a bit better next prep. She doesn’t have to improve much and she’s on an upwards spiral.”
Lane ruled out any immediate interstate travel, opting to remain local for now. “Definitely stay here for the Winterbottom (1200m) and Gold Rush (1400m),” he said. “We’ll worry about it (going east) after that, if it comes, it comes. Definitely staying home for the moment.”
The decision to reschedule the Belmont Sprint to Pinjarra after Saturday’s abandonment may have been a blessing. “I think it worked in our favour, to be honest,” Lane said. “She’d rather be on the fresh side a bit. I rode her Monday morning at the track, and she felt enormous. She felt really well, and I thought she would take some rocking if she got the right run.”
Lane also celebrated a second win on the card when Six Shooter took out race nine in a close finish.
