Lady Shenandoah spot on to upset Ka Ying Rising in The Everest 2025

Darren Beadman knows better than most what Hong Kong’s best sprinter Ka Ying Rising will face when he races away from Sha Tin for the first time in The Everest (1200m) at Randwick.

Having spent four seasons riding in Hong Kong, Beadman understands the unique challenges of transitioning to Australian tracks. All of Ka Ying Rising’s 16 starts have been at Sha Tin, and regular jockey Zac Purton suggested Randwick’s different turf profile may have contributed to the star’s recent trial defeat.

“It’s a sandier profile at Randwick than Rosehill, and Sha Tin does have that degree of sand profile as well — probably not as much as Happy Valley,” Beadman said. “Then it’s also a bit more undulating. It’s not a billiard table like Sha Tin. But good horses adapt to any circumstance.”

Beadman, now part of Chris Waller’s team, will oversee the preparation of Waller’s trio of Everest runners — Lady Shenandoah, Joliestar and Angel Capital — all of whom will aim to topple the Hong Kong superstar.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion. All I know is that our three horses are good,” Beadman said, downplaying the importance of Ka Ying Rising’s trial loss.

Lady Shenandoah had a solo gallop at Rosehill on Saturday, completing 1000m in 1:06.84, running home her final 600m in 36.83 seconds. “There’s not an ounce of fat on her,” Beadman said. “She’s doing better now than before she went to Melbourne.”

The mare finished fourth in the Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley but has thrived since returning home. Kerrin McEvoy partnered her in Saturday’s gallop but will ride Jedibeel in The Everest, with James McDonald and Damian Lane expected to ride Waller’s other runners, and Ben Melham booked for Angel Capital.
