New Zealand jockey Opie Bosson will make a rare trip to Melbourne to ride high class four-year-old Mongolian Khan at Flemington.

The New Zealand and Australian Derby winner will have his first spring run in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) on Saturday.

Bosson partnered the son of Holy Roman Emperor to his two Derby successes and is looking forward to reuniting with Mongolian Khan who is trained by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman.

The jockey hasn’t been seen in Melbourne since riding Katie Lee in a feature mare’s race at Moonee Valley in 2010.

But he is no stranger to Group One success at Flemington, taking out the 1998 VRC Oaks on Grand Archway.

Bosson has also ridden with success on the international stage but said his victory on Mongolian Khan in the Australian Derby this year was his biggest.

He said the 1600m of Saturday’s race was obviously short of Mongolian Khan’s best but he would be happy as long as he hit the line strongly.

“We won’t know too much until after the race how he’s come up but he seems a good type of horse to go over for,” Bosson said.

“I’ve galloped him a few times and ridden him in a few trials and he’s trialled up quite well.

“As long as he’s hitting the line strongly I’ll be happy.

“The mile is going to be far too short and 2000 metres plus is going to be his go.”

The Maybe Diva has attracted 22 nominations including Boban who is looking for a second Group One success this season after winning the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on August 29.

Other nominations include Alpine Eagle, Fawkner, Gust Of Wind, Happy Trails and New Zealand galloper Volkstok’n’barrell.

Mongolian Khan shares the second line of betting in the Caulfield Cup and is on the third line for the Melbourne Cup.
