Dan Morton looks to have unearthed a promising type in King Of Light, who made an impressive entrance to racing by winning the Tabtouch Place A Same Race Multi Plate (1300m) at Pinjarra on Saturday with ease.
Marking himself as another exciting prospect for the upcoming Ascot carnival, Morton was thrilled by the colt’s dominant debut performance and is eyeing bigger targets in the months ahead.
A path towards the WA Guineas (1600m) is already on the agenda for the son of Earthlight, who came from the rear of the field to produce a powerful surge and claim victory over the well-fancied Aberdeen Flyer.
Ridden by William Pike, King Of Light cruised through the final stages and secured the win by half a length, showcasing potential far beyond his inexperience.
Morton acknowledged it was only an early glimpse but admitted the debut win was the ideal way to launch the colt’s career.
“Very pleasing and he’s been a nice horse all the way through for us,” Morton said on Tabradio.
“To get the job done first up over 1300m was really good.
“He didn’t have the tools early to know what he was supposed to be doing, but probably fortunate to lob following the favourite.
“I was hopeful he would find plenty, but I fought the Sean Casy horse (Aberdeen Flyer) would trump us with race experience.
“There was a lot to like about our guy.”
Although he typically prefers to give young horses multiple runs in their debut prep, Morton hinted King Of Light could head straight to the paddock after his Pinjarra success.
“Normally speaking I do like to give them a couple to cement their prep,” Morton said.
“Horses like him you would naturally aim up at a Guineas, we’ll work backwards from that.”
While there are still several months before the WA Guineas in November, Morton is confident the colt has the attributes to measure up to stakes company.
“You aim there.” Morton said.
“They obviously have to keep on improving, come back, run a mile out strong and all the rest of it.
“I don’t see any reason why he’s not the type of horse that will try to.”
