King Cobia in fine fettle for Goldmarket 2014

Tough Sydney galloper King Cobia has done well on a trip north and is set to add a missing page to trainer Gai Waterhouse’s impressive Gold Coast scrapbook on Saturday.

King Cobia, a last-start winner on Randwick’s Kensington track, is among the favourites for the $100,000 Listed Goldmarket (1300m).

Sydney’s seven-time premier trainer, Waterhouse has a record in Gold Coast feature races that is second to none.

Her haul includes Magic Millions Classic wins with Assertive Lad, Excellerator, Dance Hero and Driefontein.

Ha Ha and Biaggio have boosted her record with Magic Millions Guineas victories.

But the one major race missing from her impressive collection is the Goldmarket which is the Gold Coast’s longest-running feature event.

In fairness to Waterhouse, the Goldmarket has been shuffled around with race dates but this year it fits in perfectly with the champion trainer’s plans.

Stable foreman Mark Newnham said King Cobia, to be ridden by Chris Munce, was the perfect type of horse for the Gold Coast and a race such as the Goldmarket.

“I have spoken to our staff up there and he has settled in well. He is the type of horse who can get up on the pace and make his own luck,” Newnham said.

“From barrier two Chris should be able to give him the run of the race,” Newnham said.

Munce and Waterhouse have had a lot of luck over the years including a Caulfield Cup with Descarado and two Magic Millions Classic triumphs with Dance Hero and Excellerator.

King Cobia is into his fifth month of racing but the four-year-old is thriving on the workload.

He defeated Reflectance at Randwick to claim his second win from his past five starts.

Early markets have King Cobia ($4) being shaded for favouritism by Morning Captain ($3.50).
