Kevin Heffernan Stakes 2013 – It Is Written set for weight-for-age test

Cranbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths is hoping It Is Written can handle a step up to weight-for-age racing in the Kevin Heffernan Stakes at Caulfield.

It Is Written bypassed the four-day Melbourne Cup carnival after his midfield placing at Moonee Valley on October 26 but the sprinter can’t avoid meeting better-credentialled horses in the Group Three race on Saturday.

The gelding won over 1200m at Caulfield three runs back and is in good order, according to Griffith.

But Griffiths admits that if Darren Weir’s mare Platelet runs after being scratched from the Group One VRC Sprint Classic last Saturday, it will make things difficult for his horse.

Under the weight-for-age conditions, Platelet, with a rating of 110, will carry 56.5kg compared to It Is Written, rated 99, who will carry 58.5kg.

“Those sort of horses will be very hard to beat and the conditions make him more of an underdog,” said Griffiths.

“But he is in good order and galloped very well in trackwork – it’s just a question of if he is good enough on the day.”

Griffiths tried It Is Written over the longer distance of 1400m in the Listed BMW Weekend Hussler Stakes on October 12 but he failed to run the journey, finishing last in a field of 10.

He was buoyed by It Is Written’s last start when he never got off the bridle and finished sixth in a blanket finish, two lengths from the winner.

“That run was inconclusive and if he had got equal opportunity, he would have been highly competitive,” Griffiths said.

He said the gelding had been a model of consistency in his career which started at Seymour in September, 2011 and had accumulated almost $370,000 in prize money.

After Saturday, It Is Written will be set for Listed Christmas Stakes at Caulfield on Boxing Day.
